When the COVID-19 pandemic spread across the United States in early 2020, social distancing protocols put a halt to most daily interactions in our lives. Students resorted to online school, recreational facilities closed, restaurants turned to take-out and delivery options, and Art From the Heart was forced to stop making in-person visits. Hospitals and senior centers housed some of the most at risk people to the virus, so Art From the Heart needed to find a way to connect with those who needed it most from afar. That was when Project With Love, Socially Distanced was launched. This project delivers sanitized, individualized "craft-kits" to afflicted communities as to facilitate arts-and-crafts-making in a socially distant environment. Art From the Heart is now packaging art supplies into individualized sets for hospitalized patients. Each kit includes all the materials necessary for the month's crafts, written instructions in English and Spanish, and a link to a Youtube tutorial made by AFTH members explaining how to create the crafts with the materials provided. These videos will be as close as we can get to speaking in person with the patients. As it is our mission to keep joy alive using creativity, this project surely embodies that goal as we are using out-of-the-box methods to continue brightening the mundane hospital days of cancer patients, especially children.
